The Hungary-Croatia Cross-border Co-operation Programme, project name: Bee2Be (Cross-border touristic routes of honey & bees), ID number: HUHR/1601/2.1.3/0008, carries on its work to popularize apicultural products within the development of “apicultural” tourism.

Within the scope of the project, the Honey of “Baranya” County Competition evaluation event took place on 22/09/2018 and the awards were distributed on 29th September on a ceremonial event as part of the Honeyed-Sweet Days.

The jury of experts tasted more than 200 kinds of honey and they classified them into four categories, thus there were acacia-, species-, flower- and linden classes. The first three from every category were awarded, further there was also a special award, which was the honey of “Baranya” County.  This year, the honey of the county has become that of Dezső Nagy, who won the award with his acacia honey.

Important factors in the jury’s decision were the density of the honey and the harmony of the various properties characterising the individual types – like flavour, smell, cleanness of production, water content, general effect and packaging.

As a further step of the project, a brochure with a map showing a touristic route crossing the borders will be made both in Hungarian and Croatian language in order to popularize beekeeping and to develop apicultural tourism at the same time. Moreover, a promotional video about beekeeping and a mobile application will be available to fit modern technology and to target young people in case people in Hungary or abroad search for beekeeping, apicultural products or touristic sights.
